The Sun is a giant, glowing ball of hydrogen and helium gas — and it’s actually a star, just like the ones you see at night, only much closer. It’s so big that more than a million Earths could fit inside it, and its gravity holds our entire solar system together.
How the Sun Makes Light and Heat:
Deep in the Sun’s core, hydrogen atoms smash together in a process called nuclear fusion, releasing enormous amounts of energy. That energy travels outward and eventually reaches us as sunlight — taking about 8 minutes to travel from the Sun to Earth.
