Equivalent Fractions for Kids

Equivalent fractions are fractions that look different but have the same value.

This is an important fraction skill because it helps kids compare fractions, simplify fractions, add fractions, and understand how numbers can show the same amount in different ways.

Learning Objectives

❓What Are Equivalent Fractions?

Equivalent fractions are fractions that are equal in value, even though the numbers are different.

Example:

1/2 = 2/4 = 3/6 = 4/8

These fractions all show the same amount.

Imagine a chocolate bar. If you eat half of it, that is:

1/2

If the same chocolate bar is divided into 4 equal parts and you eat 2 parts, that is:

2/4

You still ate the same amount. That means:

1/2 = 2/4

Why Do Equivalent Fractions Look Different?

Equivalent fractions look different because the whole is divided into a different number of equal parts.

For example, one pizza can be cut into:

2 slices
4 slices
6 slices
8 slices

If you eat half the pizza, the number of slices you eat changes depending on how many slices the pizza has.

1 out of 2 slices = 1/2
2 out of 4 slices = 2/4
3 out of 6 slices = 3/6
4 out of 8 slices = 4/8

The numbers are different, but the amount is the same.

How to Make Equivalent Fractions

You can make equivalent fractions by multiplying the numerator and denominator by the same number.

Example:

1/2

Multiply the top and bottom by 2:

1 × 2 = 2
2 × 2 = 4

So:

1/2 = 2/4

Multiply the top and bottom by 3:

1 × 3 = 3
2 × 3 = 6

So:

1/2 = 3/6

The rule is:

Whatever you do to the numerator, you must also do to the denominator.

Equivalent Fractions by Dividing

You can also make equivalent fractions by dividing the numerator and denominator by the same number.

Example:

4/8

Divide the top and bottom by 4:

4 ÷ 4 = 1
8 ÷ 4 = 2

So:

4/8 = 1/2

This is called simplifying a fraction.

Real-Life Examples of Equivalent Fractions

Pizza

Half a pizza can be:

1/2
2/4
3/6
4/8

Measuring Cups

In cooking:

2/4 cup = 1/2 cup

Time

Thirty minutes is half an hour.

30/60 hour = 1/2 hour

Money

Two quarters equal half a dollar.

2/4 of a dollar = 1/2 of a dollar

Common Equivalent Fractions

1/2 = 2/4 = 3/6 = 4/8
1/3 = 2/6 = 3/9 = 4/12
1/4 = 2/8 = 3/12 = 4/16
2/3 = 4/6 = 6/9 = 8/12
3/4 = 6/8 = 9/12 = 12/16

Why Equivalent Fractions Matter

Equivalent fractions are important because they help kids understand that numbers can show the same amount in different ways.

They also help with:

Comparing fractions
Simplifying fractions
Adding fractions
Subtracting fractions
Using number lines
Understanding decimals and percentages later

For example, if students need to compare 1/2 and 3/6, they can see they are equal.

Common Mistake Kids Make

A common mistake is changing only the numerator or only the denominator.

For example:

1/2 is not equivalent to 2/2

Why? Because only the numerator changed.

To make an equivalent fraction, you must multiply or divide both the numerator and the denominator by the same number.

Correct:

1/2 = 2/4

Because:

1 × 2 = 2
2 × 2 = 4
