❓What Are Equal Parts?

Before learning halves, thirds, and quarters, kids need to understand equal parts.

Equal parts are pieces that are the same size. Fractions only work when the whole is divided equally.

For example, if a sandwich is cut into two same-size pieces, each piece is one half. But if one piece is much bigger than the other, the pieces are not equal, so they are not true halves.

What Is a Half?

A half means one of two equal parts.
